Garage Sale to benefit KEXP – local listener-supported radio station

The September Damsels meeting rocked! Noemi was the meeting leader and choose to read about Patti Smith from the book RAD American Women A – Z by Kate Schatz and Miriam Klein Stahl.  You can see the whole meeting recap here. They debated several action options including holding a concert or creating a flyer for awareness. They ended up planning a garage sale fund raiser to benefit KEXP (an amazing local non-profit radio station that champions Patti Smith).

The Damsels worked with their families and friends to clear out closets and prepare merchandise for the sale. They worked together to create and post all of the signs as well as organizing and pricing all of the goods. A highlight of the day was when KEXP played Patti Smith’s “People have the Power” and dedicated it to the group. The sale was a huge success (due mostly to the talents of the sign-twirlers and negotiators).

The Damsels were all so excited about the donation to the station that they decided to deliver it together. They met on a Saturday afternoon and Katrina led them on a behind the scenes tour of the station. (KEXP offers free tours to the public daily at 2:00 pm). DJ Morgan was on the air and welcomed the girls into the booth to deliver their donation. Noemi bravely took the mic and told the world about Damsels in Progress and how they were inspired by Patti Smith to hold a fundraiser for the station. It was an amazing day and the Damsels are now proud members of the KEXP community.
