Mae Jemison – Astronaut, Educator and Doctor
For the month of July, Jewel asked the group to read about Mae Jemison from the book Women in Science – 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World by Rachel Ignotofsky. They also read a short bio and interview and watched this video of Mae Jemison talking about her experiences in preparation for their discussion.
As always, the girls started off with some snacks and introductions. As the settled in, they talked about what they had learned about Mae Jemison from both the book and other sources. They were particularly impressed that she had been a dancer, doctor AND astronaut. One of the Damsels was especially excited about her Star Trek cameo.
They moved into the TV room and watched the video of Mae Jemison talking about her experiences. Inspired by what they had read and watched, the girls took to thinking about what kind of action they could take in relation to Dr. Jemison.
There were suggestions of designing and building rockets to share with Dr. Jemison as well as making a Star Trek inspired video. Then, Jewel shared with the group that she had recently visited the Museum of Flight and was disappointed to see that they didn’t have any information about Mae Jemison in the entire museum. They unanimously decided to develop an exhibit for the museum and will be meeting at a later day to start the creative process. We will update this post once the exhibit has been created and delivered.
As always, the group finished the meeting with buttons and some fun!
